The Adirondacks are known for their beautiful lakes, protected old-growth forests, and stunning views—and some of the best vistas can be found on the twists and turns of these Lake George hikes. As one of the most popular destinations in the Adirondacks, Lake George is one of the largest lakes in the area clocking in at approximately 32 miles long, but only one to three miles across. The narrow body of water is the perfect setting for hiking trails and exploring the rugged beauty of the Adirondacks.
Lake George hikes vary in length and difficulty—from east jaunts with waterfalls and gradual elevation gains to moderate and difficult treks with steep climbs to panoramic outlook points. While the Lake George area has a lot to offer visitors, it can be often be crowded and overrun with tourists. Our best suggestion is enjoying a day trip to Lake George, but when it comes to lodging in the Adirondacks it’s best to stay off the beaten path for the full immersive expereince in this magincal wilderness wonderland.Â

The Best Lake George Hikes in the Adirondacks
While you’ll love to explore the private trails on our property surrounding our hotel in the Adirondacks, which you’ll feel like you have all to yourself, checking out one of the Lake George hikes is a fantastic way to spend a beautiful day. Here we’ll profile six of the best Lake George hiking trails on the west side of the lake, which are about a half hour from our Inn.Â
- Amy’s Park: For those who might be beginner hikers, this wildlife area in Bolton Landing is 500 acres with short and interconnected trails for easy exploration. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife; there’s a great place to launch a kayak or canoe near the parking area.Â
- The Pinnacle: This is a popular choice of the Lake George hikes and follows a 1.5-mile route known as the new Bradley’s Lookout Trail. The short trail is considered easy but does include a few steep climbs, so you’ll likely break a sweat. You’ll see amazing views of the Tongue Mountain range, Buck Mountain, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, the Narrows, Shelving Rock, and more.Â
- Cat & Thomas Mountains: These two peaks can be accessed from one trail network. The Cat is generally a more popular pick, but if you’re up for including two mountains in your trek, it’s about a 7 to 8-mile hike in total.
- Prospect Mountain: As one of the most popular Lake George hikes, this is a very steep 3-mile climb, but from the top, you’ll enjoy picture-perfect expansive views of the Lake George area and historical remnants of the old Prospect Mountain Cable Incline Railway.
- Hackensack Mountain: While this trail isn’t on the lake, you’ll find some very dense and beautiful forested areas worth exploring. The 2.7-mile loop looks out over Warrensburg and surrounding mountains.Â
- Tongue Mountain: For a more strenuous outing, you’ll find a total of six separate hikes in this range, but two of the most popular Lake George Hikes are French Mountain and Clay Meadow, pass by picturesque waterfalls. These are best for experienced hikers who have the correct gear and stamina.
