The Adirondacks are known for their beautiful lakes, protected old-growth forests, and stunning views, and some of the best vistas can be found on the twists and turns of these Lake George hikes. As one of the most popular destinations in the Adirondacks, Lake George is one of the largest lakes in the area, clocking in at approximately 32 miles long, but only one to three miles across. The narrow body of water is the perfect setting for hiking in the Adirondacks and exploring the rugged beauty of the region. Popular routes like the Prospect Mountain Trail and Buck Mountain offer breathtaking views and are considered some of the best hikes in the Adirondacks.
Lake George hikes vary in length and difficulty—from easy jaunts with waterfalls and gradual elevation gains to moderate and challenging treks with steep climbs to panoramic outlook points. Trails such as the Prospect Mountain hiking trail are especially popular, offering a steep but accessible 3-mile climb with incredible views from the top of Prospect Mountain, Lake George. While the Lake George area has a lot to offer visitors, it can often be crowded and overrun with tourists. Our best suggestion is enjoying a day trip to Lake George, but when it comes to lodging in the Adirondacks, it’s best to stay off the beaten path for the full immersive experience in this magical wilderness wonderland.

The Best Lake George Hikes in the Adirondacks
While you’ll love to explore the private trails on our property surrounding our hotel in the Adirondacks, which you’ll feel like you have all to yourself, checking out one of the Lake George hikes is a fantastic way to spend a beautiful day.
One of the most iconic routes in the region is the Prospect Mountain hike—a steep but rewarding 3-mile trail that leads to sweeping panoramic views over Lake George and beyond. As one of the best hikes in Upstate NY, it also offers a glimpse into local history with remnants of the old Prospect Mountain Cable Incline Railway still visible at the summit.
Whether you’re visiting in summer or fall, this trail is a must for anyone seeking classic Adirondack views and a moderately challenging adventure. Here we’ll profile six of the best Lake George hiking trails on the west side of the lake, which are about a half hour from our Inn:
- Amy’s Park is ideal for beginner hikers. This wildlife area in Bolton Landing is 500 acres with short and interconnected trails for easy exploration. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife; there’s a great place to launch a kayak or canoe near the parking area.
- The Pinnacle is a popular choice of the Lake George hikes and follows a 1.5-mile route known as the new Bradley’s Lookout Trail. The short trail is considered easy but does include a few steep climbs, so you’ll likely break a sweat. You’ll see amazing views of the Tongue Mountain range, Buck Mountain, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, the Narrows, Shelving Rock, and more.
- Cat & Thomas Mountains can be accessed from one trail network. The Cat is generally a more popular pick, but if you’re up for including two mountains in your trek, it’s about a 7 to 8-mile hike in total.
- Prospect Mountain is one of the most popular Lake George hikes. This is a very steep 3-mile climb, but from the top, you’ll enjoy picture-perfect expansive views of the Lake George area and historical remnants of the old Prospect Mountain Cable Incline Railway. It’s frequently mentioned as one of the best hikes in Upstate NY, and it’s easy to see why.
- While Hackensack Mountain isn’t directly on the lake, you’ll find some very dense and beautiful forested areas worth exploring. The 2.7-mile loop looks out over Warrensburg and the surrounding mountains.
- For a more strenuous outing, you’ll find six separate hikes at Tongue Mountain, but two of the most popular Lake George hikes are French Mountain and Clay Meadow. These hikes pass by picturesque waterfalls and are best for experienced hikers who have the correct gear and stamina.
