Head to High Falls Gorge in the Adirondacks This Fall

The High Falls Gorge is an exceptional destination in the Adirondacks all year round, but it happens to be particularly magical in the fall season. Our beautiful mix of hardwood forests and evergreens creates a stunning background of fiery reds, oranges, and golden hues, bringing the area to life in vibrant colors. You’ll see this brilliant nature show at every turn, from the car windows on your scenic drive in, along the stunning hiking trails, and framing the lakes and waterfalls in the Adirondacks.

One of the best things to do in the Adirondacks this fall is head to High Falls Gorge. This 22-acre nature park features hiking and walking trails, stunning waterfalls, bridges, and glass-floor pathways. The nature park is privately owned, but it has welcomed visitors since 1890 to take in this gorgeous expanse of untouched wilderness.

A Beautiful Walk at High Falls Gorge

High Gorge Falls is about an hour’s scenic drive from our Upstate New York Hotel—the perfect distance for a romantic road trip with the fall colors flying by your car windows. You’ll be ready to stretch your legs, breathe the fresh mountain air, and take in four of the Adirondacks’ most beautiful and rugged waterfalls.

Here’s what to expect on a visit to High Gorge Falls:

  1. High Falls Gorge is a privately owned nature park spanning 22 acres. Since the 1890s, the owners have provided safe trail access to all ages, offering a view of four spectacular waterfalls that would otherwise be inaccessible due to the narrow granite-walled Gorge. You’ll cross sturdy steel bridges, some with glass bottoms, and witness the breathtaking nature of the Adirondacks.
  2. On your visit, you’ll stroll through one of the last remaining untouched forests of centuries-old American Hemlock Trees. These massive evergreen trees have been spared from logging and wildfires, creating a magical backdrop to reconnect with nature and marvel at our beautiful surroundings.
  3. High Falls Gorge is a stunning natural phenomenon created by the AuSable River over a billion years ago. The majestic ravine, which is called “The Ancient Valley of Foaming Water” by Native Americans, is characterized by the foam that occurs naturally within the Gorge. You’ll witness this waterfall from many different angles and feel the mist on your face.
  4. The High Falls Gorge is also home to one of Upstate New York’s largest potholes. Natural potholes form when river currents erode an exposed rock layer, creating a giant depression.
  5. May through October (considered the summer season at High Falls Gorge), you’ll be privy to the beautiful wildflowers, fall foliage, and lush colors within the Gorge. Two glass platforms suspend you over the mighty waters of the AuSable River (not open in the winter season). Escape to the serene Woodlands Picnic Area by the riverside to enjoy nature’s beauty and take a break.
  6. From November to March, exquisite ice formations embellish the granite cliffs during the winter months, providing breathtaking panoramic views. They provide traction devices that can be worn over your footwear to ensure your safety. Plan to dress warmly in layers to enjoy the picturesque scenery at this location best. If the weather permits, after exploring the majestic icy waterfalls, you can try snowshoeing on our tranquil one-mile nature trail aside from indulging in the panoramic view.
  7. Grab lunch at the on-site cafe after your explorations at High Falls Gorge—the River View Cafe offers light snacks to hearty lunch fare, including wraps, salads, and sweet treats.
  8. Plan ahead for High Falls Gorge and book your tickets online! Single adult tickets are $15.95 and include access to the entire woodland expanse.
